Saimme viestiä amerikkalaiselta tutkijalta, professori Michele Friednerilta Chicagosta. Hän on itse englantia puhuva SI-käyttäjä, joka osaa myös amerikkalaista viittomakieltä. Michele on tehnyt kahdeksan vuoden ajan tutkimusta sisäkorvaistutteiden käytöstä kehitysmaissa ja perehtynyt erityisesti Intian tilanteeseen. Hello!
My name is Michele Friedner and I am a cultural medical anthropologist from the United States. I am a bilateral cochlear implant user and I both speak in both English and American Sign Language. I work at the University of Chicago in the US. I am writing because I conduct research on cochlear implantation in India. My research has focused on how families in India choose to implant their children, the role of the state in providing cochlear implants and post-implantation rehabilitation, and what happens after implantation. I am very interested in learning more about what happens in Finland, a country with presumably more resources. I would love to talk to families about how they’ve made decisions and their experiences. I would ideally come to Helsinki either in the third week of June or second week of August (to be determined). Or we could talk over zoom or another platform– and for as long or as short as you’d like! I really appreciate you considering my request and I’d be happy to tell you more about me and my research as well!
